A memorable July 4th weekend

We had so been looking forward to the long weekend and having Mimi and Papaw visit from Indiana.  Unfortunately, on Friday afternoon, A started being really fussy and it continued through dinner while my parents were here eating with us.   As Friday night progressed and into Saturday morning, A screamed in pain, wailed and was literally inconsolable for 12+ hours.  We slept about 30 minutes all night and tried to figure out what was wrong with our little man......after reaching a fever of 103 and seeming unable to be consoled, I called the doctor early Saturday.  Of course, our pediatrician's office was closed for the 4th so, they referred us to the After Hours Clinic....the doctor (who we saw after 2 hours of waiting with a fussy baby who was burning up!!) told us that A's ears, throat and vital signs were all fine but, she felt like he needed further labs to rule out more serious problems, such as bacterial menigitis. So, she sent us to Children's Hospital downtown for more testing.  Thankfully, because my in-laws were in town, S was able to be with me and the baby and they took care of K.

After a CT scan to rule out hydrocephalus (crazy experience to see our tiny baby strapped down and go through this gigantic testing machine), the doctor's moved on to blood work, urine samples and a spinal tap to try and figure out what was going on.  While I thought the catheterization was going to be absolutely awful, A didn't seem to mind that.  But, the port they put into his tiny litle hand to draw blood and give him IV fluids/medicine, he did NOT care for.  They made us leave the room for his spinal tap (lumbar puncture---they insert a long needle into the base of his spine and withdraw fluid to look for infection) but, when we came back, it was obvious that A wasn't crazy about that procedure either.   But, all in all, he did great and S and I held up pretty well, thanks to the peace from God, the fabulous doctors in charge and the prayers of many family and friends.  We were so relieved to hear that all of the cultures came back negative for any serious bacterial infection and finally got a diagnosis of viral menigitis. It causes him to have a bad headache and neck/back pain, which explains why he was screaming everytime we tried to put him in his crib. There is no treatment---we just have to treat the symptoms (fever/pain) and let it run its course which may take a week or so.

We were at the hospital for 8 hours SO, needless to say...it wasn't the 4th of July that we had planned but, we are so thankful that he is ok and it wasn't something more serious.  Quite a different day than the 4th of July six years ago, when S and I got engaged and began planning our family together!!

We took a couple of pictures of the day, even though we really don't want to remember it....(these are from our cell phones so, they aren't the best quality)

the big ole hospital bed dwarfed our little guy....

trying to get him settled down after they drew blood and put the IV port in...

In other Corbin news, K is doing well with the potty training....in fact, she started back to Mother's Day Out yesterday and
tee-tee'd twice in the potty while at school!! We are celebrating the "small victories' and our so proud of our girl!!
